Rainy days can offer a unique blend of pleasure and pain. Jumping in puddles can be fun, but getting absolutely drenched is not so pleasant. So, how do you keep dry when the rain is coming down? Put on a rain coat or a coat made of waterproof material. Here we will dive into the 5 waterproof fabrics that help to keep you dry — and some tips to help you find the best rain jacket for you.
eVent: Similar to Gore-Tex, but with a different method of allowing moisture to escape. (Unlike some of the waterproof fabrics mentioned above, eVent has a specific structure that allows air to pass through it more readily.) This is why it is great for high-impact exercises such as running or other high-level cardiovascular activities. And eVent is very durable, so it can take a lot of abuse without coming apart.
Blend: This fabric is a mixture of nylon/polyester or other synthetic materials. Often found in mud jackets, as it is lightweight, strong and usually not overly costly. While nylon and polyester are water-resistant on their own, this fabric makes for a combination that is capable of withstanding heavy rain and strong winds. The other really cool thing about this blend is that it’s so easy to care for; you can wash and dry it in your machine without worry of damage.
PVC — PVC is the plastic often used in rain jackets to keep water out. Rainwise, it works really well, but also bear in mind that it does not let any air pass. For that reason, PVC is more suited to short spurts of outdoor activity or to keep dry while doing a bit of light work around the house. On top of that, PVC is not particularly environmentally friendly because it's made from petroleum-based materials and can be difficult to recycle.
Where do you live? If you live in an area with a lot of rain, and some humidity, a more breathable fabric such as Gore-Tex or eVent may be best. These fabrics will help keep you dry and comfortable.” However, if you reside in a drier climate, you may be able to make use of a less breathable fabric, like PUL or nylon/polyester. These will certainly keep you dry while drying out, but are less breathable, so don't get too hot.
What is your budget? When it comes to rain jackets, a reasonable budget is always a consideration. Both Gore-Tex and eVent are high-end fabrics, but they come with a high-end price tag. For alternative materials on a budget, PUL and nylon/polyester work well. PVC tends to be the least expensive option, but note that it may not be the most comfortable or eco-friendly choice.
